Learn how to pick art prints that fit your space, style, and budget. We cover sizing, framing, and mixing prints for a modern gallery wall.
Quick answer
For a modern gallery wall, choose art prints that share a common color palette or line style, vary sizes for visual interest, and always frame them to protect the paper. Start with a focal piece like The Kiss Art Print or a Line Art Modern Wall Poster, then build around it.
Why size matters more than you think
The size of your art prints affects the balance of your gallery wall. Large prints make a bold statement and can anchor a grouping, while smaller prints fill gaps and add detail. A common mistake is choosing all prints the same size, which can look monotonous. Mixing sizes creates rhythm and guides the eye across the wall.
Framing: the hidden factor
Art prints are shipped rolled in a tube to prevent damage, but they need a frame to look finished and to protect them from dust and moisture. Frames also let you tie the prints into your room's decor. Choose frames that complement each other—matching frames create a cohesive look, while mixed frames add an eclectic feel. Remember, frames are not included with the prints, so factor that into your budget.
Decision rules for choosing art prints
- Start with a focal point: Pick one print that you love and that fits the room's style. Use it as the anchor of your gallery wall, then choose other prints that complement it in color or theme. Your focal print sets the tone—choose it first.
- Mix sizes for balance: Combine large, medium, and small prints to create visual interest. A large print like The Kiss Art Print can be balanced by smaller line art pieces. Variety in size prevents monotony.
- Stick to a color palette: Choose prints that share at least one color or tone. For a modern look, consider black-and-white line art or muted botanical tones like the Desert Cactus Art Print. A unified palette makes the wall feel intentional.
- Consider the room's function: In a living room, choose prints that spark conversation; in a bedroom, opt for calming images. The Lavender Poster Duo Pack works well in a serene bedroom setting. Match the mood to the room.
- Frame before you hang: Always frame your prints to protect them and to make them look polished. Choose frames that complement your decor and the print's style. Framing is a necessary step—budget for it.
